Islam-aga’s Mosque


Besides the socio-political changes which Ottoman Empire brought to Nis, many transformations were made in architecture too. Several mosques were built in Nis, once significant strategic and administrative center of the Empire, mostly within the walls of the Fortress and few outside such as the Islam-aga’s Mosque. This mosque was the endowment of Islam-aga Hadarevic, contributor of a commander of the city and was built in 1870. on foundation of older, damaged mosque.  It has a rectangular shape with a flat wooden roof and a gallery on pillars and represents the last Ottoman public facility which was built in Nis. There were nineteen mosques during Ottoman rule in Nis, but
