The Pasteur Institute
The Pasteur Institute building was constructed in 1900. It was the first preventive care institution in the Balkans. In May 1900, in the eastern part of the building, machines for manufacturing vaccines were installed: by the end of that year, 11,540 units of the serum were made. The first to be inoculated against rabies were recruits set to start their military service that autumn. In the first year of the Institute’s activity, 225 people were cured after being bitten by rabid animals. In the period 1901-1915 the Pasteur Institute was the only institution of its kind in the country.
